Asaba 2018: Ntia-Obong, Udo-Gabriel, Ogunlewe advance to 100m semifinal
The 2018 Africa Senior Athletics Championships got underway today, August 1st at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in the city of Asaba, Delta state with 4 Nigerians booking a slot in the 100m semifinal.
African Junior champion, Jou Udo-Gabriel was the first to don the Green and white colours of Nigeria as she had a good start which gave her an early lead to clinch heat 3 of the women’s 100m in 11.64s. Gambia’s Gina Bass finished 2nd in 11.74s as Natacha Ngoye Akamabi of Congo settled for 3rd in 11.78s.
Fastest athlete on the home front. Ntia-obong Mercy who ran a Pesonal Best of 11.24s which she set in June. She finished 2nd in heat 4 of the Women’s 100m in 11.66s. Egypt’s Basant Hemida won the race in 11.60s while Ghana’s Halutie Hor finished in 3rd with 11.77s.
Ivory Coast’s Marie Ta Lou had the fastest time in the qualfying round, winning heat 1 in 11.25s. Janet Amponsah of Ghana finished in 2nd with a time of 11.63s while South Africa’s Cassidy Williamson was 3rd in 11.79s.
South Africa’s Tebogo Mamatu took heat 2 in 11.90s as Nanzie Adeline (11.91s) and Phumlile Sibonakele (12.05s) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The men’s event had 6 heats with 3 Nigerians competing for a slot in the semis. Egwero Ogho-Oghene competed in heat 1, finishing 3rd in 10.52s behind Ben Youssef Meite of Ivory Coast (10.41s) and South Africa’s Simon Magakwe who finished closely in 10.42s.
3-time National champion, Seye Ogunlewe entertained the home crowd as he caught up with Namabia’s Gilbert Hanuga to w his heat in 10.42s. While Enoch Adegoke who competed alongside Commonwealth 100m Champion, Simbine Akani finished 4th in his heat in 10.64s and would be hopeful to qualify to the semis as one of the next 6 fastest.
The semifinal will hold tomorow, Aug. 2nd with the finals coming up later in the day. Good luk to them.
