The 2017 Calendar has been released but it’s not comprehensive – Com. Nesiama Omatseye
Earlier this week concerns were raised by Nigerian athletic buffs to the delay of the athletic calendar for the 2017 season by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) as many feared that they may not have a chance to jostle for a spot on the national team to various international competitions.
Speaking with ‘Athletic Heat’ AFN Technical Director, Navy Commodore. Nesiama Omatseye disclosed that the 2017 athletic schedule has been released!!!
‘’The schedule is released. It’s a simple schedule because we are trying to cut our clothes according to our size. So we have straight forward competitions that we believe can help the athletes. It’s not as comprehensive as the last season because we obviously have challenges and we don’t want to overdo things.
‘’Most of us have spent our money in the last two years and we have not been able to get any form of reimbursement. So we decided this time around to look at our calendar and see how we can adjust for the sake of the athletes, run meets that would put them in shape and get them in position that they would be able to qualify for the various Championships.’’
Speaking on the transition of the Ogba-led tenure to a new tenure, he said Ogba has indicated to take his leave.
‘’There’s a process and when this tenure terminates its time, elections would be held and a new board will come in as well as a new president. The president has now indicated to take his leave after two terms and we look forward to what structure the next board would be.’’
On whether or not the Junior athletes would have a chance to compete at The African Junior Championships in May due to paucity of funds. He said,
‘’I’ve spent a lot of my money on athletics in the past two years, almost 22 million (naira) and no reimbursement from wherever. The current Minister approved 15 million (naira) for ticket money that I spent to qualify athletes for the All Africa Games, Olympics amongst others and that has not been paid.
‘’The ministry has funding challenges and I cannot actually from all sense of responsibility tell you that I will be ready to commit more funds, it would be stupid to do and that is some of the things probably affecting the running of an effective calendar this year. Except I get some clear assurance, it would be difficult for one to commit more funds in a situation where you are not sure you will be reimbursed.’’
On a final note. He said,
‘’Our calendar this year would be very modest. It’s out and we would find a way to organize the competitions, select athletes to represent us in the various competitions. We may not be able to go ahead except we get sponsors, go ahead to get prize monies and all that but we would just concern ourselves to be able to get a very good competition to enable the athletes and enable us get a very objective platform to select our athletes for the various competitions.’’ said Com. Nesiama.
