NIGERIAN MASTERS SHOW THEY STILL GOT IT!!

The 9th Edition of The African Masters held at Limbe, Cameroun was a great opportunity for retired (masters) athletes to show that they still got what it takes to perform even after hanging up thier kits.

The Nigeria Athletics Masters had a wonderful outing and showcased that quality never dies, at Limbe Cameroun winning 30 GOLD,6 SILVER AND 3 BRONZE.
The Masters competition is in groups of 5 years
35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99, 100+
In all athletics events
Some of the most impressive performances include that of Ogunleye Richard(NSCDC) and Oyewole Adeboye(NSCDC) who both won 4 Gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 4x400m in age bracket of 40-44 and 45-49 respectively.

Achi Solomon dominated the jumps in the mens category of 45-49 winning both the long and triple jump and helping 4x100m and 4x400m team to a gold and silver respectively.
Seriki Oladipupo took home 3 golds dominating the mid-distant events with a gold in the 800m, 1500m and the 4x400m while his female compatriot Anetor Irene claimed the gold in both the 10,000m and the 800m
Horsfall Obeleye and Johnson Elizabeth Izah won gold medals each in the throws in categories  50-54 and 45-49, with horsfall claiming gold in the shot put and discus while johnson winning the javelin and triple jump

Speaking with AthleticHeat on the event the Secretary of Nigerian Athletics Masters Coach Uruemu Adu has this to say about the event ” I am so happy about the performance of the team despite the teething problems, this is the 9th edition and the second one we have participated in. It shows we can still do our country proud. More so we want the African Masters to grow and Nigeria wants to be part of that growth”
In response to what we should expect from the masters in the future he said ” I am hoping we are going to be more athletes in Abidjan, I want more athletes to embrace Masters athletics for fun and health, We are also looking forward to hosting just masters competition in Nigeria but lack of sponsors is affecting us hosting it, it would be great fun and reunion of great athletes of yesteryear”
He also expressed his passion for masters athletics saying “I am very passionate about masters athletics and I want it to grow in Nigeria and Africa. I am also coordinating the west coast countries to embrace masters athletics, i was in Ghana last year ans hope to get some other countries like Benin, Gambia, Togo to set up their masters athletics
During the championships a delegate meeting was held and elections took place and the results are:
Masters Dr.(Mrs.)Gloria Obajimi was re-elected as the women representative of the body.
