Ruth Usoro joins Divine Oduduru at Texas Tech University, Lubbock

Athletic Heat COO and NJCAA Long & Triple Jump champion, Ruth Usoro has committed the rest of her collegiate career to Texas Tech University, the home to multiple NCAA  track and field national champions as well as 2019 Africa’s fastest man, Divine Oduduru.

Texas Tech’s cross country and indoor/outdoor track & field teams are coached by Wes Kittley, and under his tutelage, Texas Tech has produced 16 national champions, seven Olympic Medalists, over 200 All-Americans and over 119 Big 12 Champions.

It is a dream come through for Ruth Usoro who began her athletics career in Lagos, Nigeria under the guidance of Coach Uruemu Adu and Olu Sule before sojourning to the United States in December, 2017 to join Fabian Edoki at South Plains College, Levelland, Texas.

During her two-year stay at South Plains, Usoro posted impressive Personal Bests over the 100m, 200m, Long Jump and Triple Jump. In fact, this season she is ranked 4th on the National list in the 200m behind Blessing Okagbare, Aniekeme Alphonsus and Favour Ofili with a PB of 23.40s, she equally ran a windy 23.07s  at the 2019 NJCAA D1 Outdoor Championships.

Interestingly during the Outdoor Champs, Ruth set THREE Personal Best’s aside from the 200m, she posted a decent 11.60s in the 100m to finish 5th then leaped 13.05m in the Triple Jump to finish 2nd behind compatriot & African Champion, Grace Anigbata while she converted the Gold in the Long Jump with a windy leap of 6.61m

Usoro is excited joining the Red Raiders and here’s her expectations with the new family.

“I feel happy. This is like a stepping stone to where I want to be. This opportunity Texas Tech gave me will help me achieve my dreams and goals both on track and academically. I do hope to use it to the best of my ability by God’s grace.”

“I’m glad to train with champions and a team that will push me to where I want to be. I feel more motivated and it’s a big deal for me and I just have to make the best use of it. I’m greatful to God and I hope to keep attaining more heights.” she stated.
