Chioma Onyekwere sets new Personal Best at Discus Indoor National Championships, USA
PERSONAL BEST ALERT!!! Last week at the Indoor Discus National Championships in Michigan, USA. Nigeria’s Chioma Onyekwere threw a distance of 59.15m to clinch the Gold at the competition.
This serves as a big boost for the University of Maryland’s Alumni who spoke to theathleticheat.com after her victory.
“I was surprised when I heard the results. I have been focusing on increasing my strength levels and I believe this sets the tone for the upcoming season.”
At the 2018 African Athletics Championships held in Asaba, Nigeria, Onyekwere decided to focus her efforts solely on the Discus throw. This paid off as she put on a show for her home country finishing first place in the Discus throw with a Personal Best throw of 58.09 meters. Her Gold medal was one of nine gold medals the Nigerian team earned in the African Championships tagged “Asaba 2018”. Onyekwere was invited to represent Team Africa in the 2018 IAAF Continental Cupheld in Ostrava, Czech Republic. She finished in 4th place with a top throw of 56.68 meters and had the furthest mark of any African Discus thrower in the competition. Her performance at this Games solidified her as the top African Discus thrower in the 2018 season.
Speaking on her experience at the African Champs she said “I would say I work hard this season and still had a lot of gas in the tank. It also help that Nigeria was hosting so I had family and cousins watching. I just wanted to make Nigeria proud. The cheering of the home crowd didn’t hurt either.” she said.
We recall that as a member of the Nigerian Senior National Track and Field Team, Onyekwere was invited to compete in the 2016 African Championships in Athletics in Durban, South Africa. She would go on to earn two Bronze Medals at these games. She helped complete a Nigerian-podium sweep by placing 3rd in the Discus with a top throw of 53.91 meters behind teammates Nwanneka Okwelogu and Chinwe Okoro. She also placed 3rd in the Shotput with a top throw of 15.71 meters.
Her performance at this Indoor Discus National Championships can equally be a New National Record as there is no Women Discus Indoor National Record on wikipedia.
