Gold Coast 2018: Rilwan Alowonle runs Nigeria’s first 400mh sub 50s in 3 years

More Nigerian’s have performed well beyond expectations at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia and Rilwan Alowonle is certainly one of the many.

University of North Carolina alumni, Rilwan Alowonle lived up to expectations in the Men’s 400m hurdles, finishing 4th in heat 2 with a massive PB of 49.49s behind behind Jaheel Hyde (49.14s), Jack Green (49.24s) and Aron Koech (49.28s). Rilwan spoke to our correspondent before his race and he was full of confidence ahead of his heat and he delivered! Infact, he is in the final.

“I really need to execute my race. I am feeling fitter than I have ever been in my life and I am feeling faster. so if I put myself in the first 300m, it will take a lot of heart and pride for me and at the end of the race I will do very very well.” He said.

The last time a Nigerian went under 50s was in 2016 by Miles Ukaoma at a meet in Bahamas with a  time of 49.60s. This is indeed a remarkable performance from Rilwan and we hope he does well in the final. Rilwan looks like an athlete who can feat into Miles shoes. You would recall that Miles ran a 48.84s which he set at the 2015 All Nigeria Championships in Warri.

National Champion, Henry Okorie for some reason couldn’t perform well as he finished 7th in heat 1 with 52.14s and will sadly to proceed to the final.

In the women’s event, Glory Nathaniel looks in shape to finish in top 4 as she held off Jamaica’s Ronda Whyte to finish 3rd in a Personal Best of 55.01s. This is indeed a great performance from the Nigerian Champion.

For teammate, Rita Ossai it wasn’t her day as she tripped at the beginning of heat 1 and got injured in the process.  We do hope it wasn’t so serious.

Rilwan and Nathaniel will compete in the men and women’s 400m hurdles final on Thursday at 10.30am and 10.45am (Nigerian time) respectively.

in the half lap event, 3 Nigerians have proceeded to the semi finals and they are Praise Idamadudu (23.54s), Isoken Igbonisun (23.55s) and Arowolo Emmanuel (20.99s). All the best Champs!
