Ogho-Oghene Egwero Erupts as rain disturbs at Sapele with Golden League date(Ilorin) likely to change
The newly constructed Blessing Okagbare Stadium was brought to live as the second leg of The Golden League series was staged there. Though Rain fell ‘cat and dog’ but that didn’t stop the meet from taking place.
The competition kicked off with the Men and Women’s 400m hurdles as Daisy Akpofa was the one to beat as she breasted the tape in 57.77s. National Champion Henry Okorie won the men’s event with 51.47s his fastest this season. The 100m women had Three heats and the winners include: Youngster Marvelous Asemota (11.97s), Isoken Igbinosun (11.50s). We must admit that the third heat had four Top notch athletes; Osazuwa Agnes, Peace Uko, Cecila Francis and Anikeme Alphonsus. They race was won by Agnes (11.54s) with Aniekeme coming in closely, we wonder why Peace and Agnes are always in the same heat. Is there a secret rivalry? We think there should be!
In the men’s heats Ogho-Oghene Egwero made everyone’s mouth go agape as he won heat 2 with a stunning 10.15(+2.3). Other winners include Divine Oduduru (10.36s), Chubi (10.51), Comfort Yomi (10.65s). World Junior hopeful, Raymond Ekevwo (10.57s) and Stanley Mbabar (10.68s) . An “eye-witness” report comments on the reason why orukpe couldnt defend his 400m league event, he said “orukpe got injured while running the 200m heat”.. And Nicholas got injured in his 100m heat, Unfortunately since there was no medical care or first aid personnel on ground, Nicolas was carried off the track on someones back..yes back!! – Coach Soetan Olalekan
We wish both athletes a quick recovery!!!

In the 100m hurdles, Grace Ayemoba won with 14.01s faster than last weeks 14.6s.
The favorite in the Men’s Javelin event, Adams Samuel did not disappoint again as he won with a distance of 67.85m.
The 200m Women had Isoken as winner (23.68s) as Mercy and Agnes Osazuwa followed closely. Divine Oduduru who earlier ran 20.77s in the heat. Crossed with 20.47(+3.4) narrowly missing his Personal Best, Ogho-Oghene was 2nd and Tega Odele came third. Orukpe Erayokan who competed in the 200m event could not participate in the 400m. He spoke to ‘Athleticheat’ on his decision. “An old injury recurred while running the 200m, I powered to hard and I felt the pain. I haven’t gone 100% in a long time like I did today. So going for the 400m would have made it worse” he said.
Finals of the 400m had Isah Salihu of Nigeria Customs win the race easily with 47.27secs. You would recall that Isah has been making a smooth progression this season from 47.85s then 47.52s and now 47.27s. He spoke to ‘Athleticheat’ after his victory “I am grateful to God for the race. There was really no challenge, after the first 100m I Led to the end. If Orukpe was in the race, I would have run a 46secs because it would have been tougher When I start dropping times, there is no looking back. My aim is to run the Olympic standard.” Gerald Ojeka and Okorie Henry were second and third respectively
Isah Salihu winning the men’s 400m
Patience Okon won the Women’s event with 52.00s which is her season best, Yinka Ajayi came in second with 53.40secs and Praise Idamadudu third with 53.76secs.
High Jump sensation, Theddus Okpara (1.95m) was beaten to second place by Obiora Arinze (2.00m). In the shot put men top three were Kalu Eke(16.20m), Okafor Stanley (13.80m) and Adams Samuel (12.32m).
The long jumpers were disappointed as their pitch was flooded by the Rain. Ese Brume who had the intention of jumping the Olympic standard would have to wait till next week before she would have the opportunity to do that. Alabi Aminat won the female 1500m with a time of 4:50 seconds and Anayo won he 800m with a time of 1.54 seconds.
It is assumed that the 3rd leg of the Golden League scheduled to hold at Ilorin will be shifted to a later date as it clashes with The Warri Peace Marathon, more news on that as events unfold.
Next up, Dr Olukoya Championships holding at The Yaba College of Technology on the 24th and 25th will show case the very best of the next generation of Nigerian star athletes, the event will be used as selection for World Juniors in Poland. We wish you all the best.
